-Hailing or Long-Distance Call
-Mating or Lonesome Duck Call
-Feed or Chatter Call
-Comeback Call.
-Contestants can repeat this series as often as they want to for the entire 60 second time period. When the time period is up, or when they feel that they’ve called enough they are to give the “Lazy Hen” call.
OFFICIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
Contestants are to pay before start time, and up to ½ hour before contest beginning. The contest start time is set by the LA Fur Festival committee. Usually, it is on Saturday morning during the Festival. Registration fees are $25.00 per each contest (Mallard Duck, Speckle Belly Goose, and Snow Goose). Contestants are not required to enter all three contests, but if they do, they will have a chance at being the “Best All Around Duck and Goose Caller” which besides the prize money in each contest, they are awarded a trophy and certificate along with other prizes donated to the contest by anonymous donors.
-
As part of the registration process, contestants are to draw a numbered ball for each contest entered from the tote container. This number will help to determine the Calling order they will be calling in. Lowest number drawn goes first and so forth. The contestants will call one at a time behind a “blind” or screened off from view by the judges, and the audience. Judges, themselves, are sequestered from the audience and the contestants.
-
When it is the contestant’s turn to call, he/she will step up into the blind a begin calling only when prompted to do so. We will ask if they want a warmup blow, contestants will nod (NO TALKING). Then they will be allowed to do just a short blow. Contestants will each have 60 seconds to call for their points. Don’t begin until prompted.
-
During the 60 second graded call time, contestants are to blow the 1) Hailing or Long Distance Call; 2) Mating or Lonesome Duck Call; 3) Feed or Chatter Call; 4) Comeback Call. Contestants can repeat this series as often as they want to for the entire 60 second time period. When the time period is up, or when they feel that they’ve called enough they are to give the “Lazy Hen” call.
-
NOTE: There is an electric lamp situated in the “Blind”-calling area. Callers must pay particular attention to this light. When it comes on, it means you have 10 seconds remaining of your calling time. You can either end here with your “Lazy Hen” or do a short flourish before your Lazy Hen. As long as you quit calling when the light goes back off.
-
Scoring: There are several judges sequestered out of sight from the callers. Each judge awards the contestant with a maximum points each, according to how well the call is perceived to resemble a real bird being called to the “Blind”. Scorecards are collected from each judge and tabulated together to obtain the final score. Tie breakers will be called before moving on to the next age group and bird species calling contest. Placing is determined by who has the most points.
-
“Best All-Around Duck and Goose Calling” award will be presented to the caller with the most overall points total. To have the best chance of winning it, the contestant is highly encouraged to enter all three contests (Mallard Duck, Speckle belly Goose, and Snow Goose).
